Gotta love kids

It’s Friday afternoon at 4 PM and am wrapping up the work week.  My teammate Sundar and I are putting the finishing touches on our final deliverables for next week.  In the meantime, here are a few noteworthy activities from the week.

On Wednesday we traveled to an elementary school in Ijelu-Ekiti with our client team from NISD.  Ileju is one of the communities where NISD is assisting orphaned and vulnerable children.  We had a wonderful experience meeting the headmaster, administrative staff, teachers, and students.  We visited several classrooms and in each of the classes the kids were very respectful, standing and welcoming us in unison and listening intently as a few of us introduced ourselves.  In one of the classes we had a tracing contest where the 5 best drawings won a small prize, and they all got plastic folders.  When we left we were given a huge number of bananas as a departure gift.  They told us if they had had more time they would have provided us with bushmeat…  Good thing we got the bananas.

On Thursday we went back to the local market in Ado.  We walked throughout the market, both along the street and in through some narrow walkways.  It’s always refreshing to mix with the locals and get a real flavor of life.

In the evening we had a debacle when we went to a local bar and restaurant.  Long story short, there was a band playing that was very loud and had a poor sound system, half of the group never got their food after waiting over two hours, and as we left there was a huge commotion between our local leader and the workers who were convinced that we owed money – even though we figured out the prices were exorbitantly high.  Another experience to add to the list.
